13 year old home. Bonus room above garage stays 5 degrees warmer than rest of house. Used to have zoned AC that kind of worked ok. But had to revert to single thermostat downstairs and now upstairs stays too warm. Single 6 ton unit for 2700 sq ft house. Looking for ways to help. Considering mini split unit or inline duct blower for that room. Any suggestions, tips, or other options?

That’s not enough a/c for that size house with a room above the garage. My parents house had the same issues but had a separate until for that side of the house. It may be a little tacky but have you considered a small window unit for that room and closing off the vents from the central air? Assuming the room has a window

Have you tried something like an ecobee thermostat? They have remote sensors you can place all over the house which tell it if there is a hot/humid spot.

Through 6 different houses we have always had trouble with our upstairs rooms even with a separate unit for that floor. I think insulation and sealing is probably important to look at too. It's never just one issue but a combination of things together.

I'm building out my unfinished bonus room now. My house is only 1.5 years old, but similar size. I have 2 ac units already for the downstairs (3 ton and 2 ton). Bonus room is 500 sqft. We're putting in a mini-split.

I think sizing is fine. It would actually cool upstairs if I lowered thermostat downstairs. Problem is that it’d be 66 downstairs to get 71 upstairs.

Not really an option. Just a dormer window.

ecobee thermostat

This is what I have. I have several sensors that average the house temp for single thermostat.

I think this is my biggest issue. I’ve thought about adding thin layer of bubble insulation under carpet. Can’t really access other parts to even check for insulation. Maybe blow in insulation?

We have a similar size house and put in a mini split. Well worth the extra cost.
