I've been watching the series The Expanse. After seeing that the show is based off of a series I was wondering if anyone has read it. I finished the Red Rising series during early Covid and been searching for my next series.

Thanks

It's a great space opera, as with most series it's better than the show (I've only watched season 1 though, so I guess I can't fully comment on the show in this case).

The show picks up after season 1.

I have been going through the series after watching the show. I think it's fantastic overall, and it really adds tons of depth that the show simply can't. The show is a great adaptation of the novels though.

With that said, my big issue with the books is that each book focuses on all new POV characters (it's written very ASOIAF style, and I believe one of the authors was an understudy to Martin). Holden is the one consistent character. This is a bit frustrating, because it takes a few chapters to get to know and like the characters and then you are to see them no more. You have to do it all over again next book.

My solution is I read the book after each season so that I have a familiarity and some semblance of connection with the new characters. I have not watched the new season yet, so my Cibola Burn (book 4... book one was the first 2 seasons of the show) read is on hold for now.

I've heard that, and it's really more of me just not getting around to watching the other seasons yet rather than me not planning to. I thought the first season was a decent adaptation with room for improvement, it's just the books are much better, as is typical.

That’s not really accurate. The entire crew of the Rocinante is present and critical in every book.

Can’t wait for book 9

I started with the show first and I loved it. That's what led me to the books and as someone else said I do think it helped me gravitate to the characters more. It also helped me picture a lot of more of the environments, ships, etc.

That said, I loved S1 and S2-S3 are my favorite of maybe any show. Space Opera, a little Film Noir, Geopolitical struggles. I loved it. I just can't wait until Book 9. I'm reading Revelation Space now and, while I enjoy it, it's not the same.

I only caught part of the 1st season of the show.

I just finished book 5 last night. The series is really good. Not high fiction, but an enjoyable space adventure with characters that I care about. Book 5 was a little slow, but still fun.

Let me just say that the books were good enough that I never felt the urge to watch the show. As with most series based on books the books are going to be better, have better world building and character building. If you like the TV series based on the books then reading the series is the logical next step to immerse yourself in the world.

I started with the show. I've read the first two books so far, and I'll be reading the rest. It's extremely worthwhile and not redundant at all.
