I was watching Putin give an interview to Oliver Stone of all people. Stone was asking him about Crimea, specifically the Russian takeover of the peninsula. Putin said they (Russians) weren’t concerned at all about US Navy presence in the Black Sea because Russia could easily take out US ships if it needed to do so.

He then described an incident where a US captain turned his destroyer around and vacated the area once he realized he was targeted by Bastion. Putin’s words:

“There is no defense for this weapon. It’s a fire and forget weapon. The ship would have been destroyed with great loss of life. The captain was aware of this and made a good decision by removing himself. He was a smart captain.”

Bastion is a mobile system that launches supersonic missiles that travel to targets at 2000 mph at 20 ft off the surface.

Is it true that there is no defense against Bastion, or at least extremely difficult to defend against? Can US navy shoot down a skimming missile coming at 2000 mph?

Easily? Put in may want to hear from his admirals particularly one who believes the US Navy would take the Black Sea fleet in 20 minutes.

Short answer is yes. Russia has used supersonic antiship missiles long enough to be admitted as an AARP member. Nothing new even same old Russian bluster.

Russian technology and capabilities have ALWAYS been overblown...

Also, the Captain of the destroyer probably turned his ship around and vacated the area in order to potentially avoid an incident...

How do we avoid getting hit by this thing or manage to shoot it down?

2000 mph comes at you awful fast. This ain’t no cruise missile flying at 500 mph.

Considering that it probably has the accuracy of a bottle rocket, we shouldn't have to.

Also, look at it from the rockets perspective, at 2000 mph, that small target 10 miles out is going to get real big, real fast.

Look up the Standard Missile family of missiles. Anything from ICBM to antiship missiles is on the menu. We even have some modified like the SM-6 to kill ships.

Cool looking video. I wonder how well they are maintained and how many are operational. I hope we never have to find out, but it seems like a lot could go wrong when launching these.
