I have to go somewhere! Trying to book something for the family. Will definitely include flying. With this craziness we are living what would be the best options out of:
Boston
Salt Lake City
Boise
San Francisco
Seattle
Phoenix
I know San Francisco and Seattle could be tricky. Just need a trip.

After more research may be leaning Buffalo/ Niagara Falls. Any hangups for making that trip by early July?

Just went to the falls and walked around tonight, gorgeous night up here. The area was dead, maybe saw 50 people in total all night. The falls were lit up and it was nice to see it. We parked in the park and walked over the pedestrian bridge to the horshoe falls. On the drive in, you get the smell of the chemical plant. Then by the horshoe falls it literally smells like shite by the cave of the caverns. They have a bunch of porta potties lined up and not sure if they just didnt empty them but it stank tonight.
For coming to the area, don't expect much to be open. It was eerie walking around tonight and the already dead city of niagara falls looked even more like a ghost town. Max 1 night up there. If you want to tour ny state, that wouldnt be bad. Central new york, fingerlakes, and adirondacks are opening up. Golf courses are open, think the beach on lake erie (woodlawn) opens as well this Saturday. Hope this helps if you do end up coming here

Appreciate the input. All my summer trips got shut down so looking for something to do. Trying to find a place where either I or my family have never been or haven’t been recently. None of us have been to Buffalo or the falls. I know you travel a lot from reading this board. If not upstate New York, what do you think about some of my other ideas.

If you can find a place in the finger lakes, that might be nice for a couple reasons. The adults can head to some wineries, plenty of outdoor activities like hiking and the actual finger lakes like keuka lake, watkins glen. I'd suggest niagara falls for one night if things are still mostly closed, spend the rest of your time outside of the cities.
Oh, mask wise, businesses have signs up in most places, but people not named Karen or don't live in high density areas aren't really concerned anymore. Walking around the falls about 20 people had masks, 40 didn't.
Eta: Sorry i'm not trying to dissuade you from coming here, this is honestly the best time of the year to come up this way. Get some wings (to go) from bar bill, you can get alcohol to go finally

Thanks. Sounds like we can make that work. It’s definitely an area of the country I have wanted to get to, so I think I’m going to take advantage of the opportunity.

If you are interested in Niagara Falls, have you considered Toronto? Travel to Canada is to reopen June 22.
There were/are non stop flights to & from Toronto from MSY, took on a few years ago. (united's partner)

We're going to Seattle around that same time. Our Alaskan cruise was cancelled so we just kept the flights. Went on Airbnb and got a cabin near Olympic state park for 3 nights and one on Orcas Island for 2. Gonna do two nights in Seattle also.

Following up on this thread, did you decide to come up this way for the 4th? I'm leaving Buff this coming friday and am gonna miss this place . Great people, good food, lots of fun things to do around the city, would like to help in any way I can if you're still headed up here.

I would go Boston with a day trip to Maine
or
Phoenix area would be nice with social distancing to Sedona or Grand Canyon
