We needed an outsider

I think for the last few years this game has meant too much to our team. The stakes are so high that mentally they couldn’t execute at the highest level.
I watched Joe Burrow’s interview with Marty Smith earlier this week and when Marty asked him why it’s so hard to win in Tuscaloosa he said “I don’t know. I have never been there.”
I don’t mean this in a bad way, but he is a mercenary. It was not his dream as a child to play for LSU. He did not grow up wanting to beat Alabama or experiencing the heartbreak of losing to them.
He approaches all of these games without emotion. That’s what allows them to be so calm in crunch time.
I think the team fed off of that businesslike approach yesterday.

Burrow's passion is winning football games.

agree with this take, we were flat out scared and mentally beaten before the game on 1/9/12
ETA: and most of the games since

I’ve thought along those lines.
Justin Fields is in the same boat. We

I was telling people all week, it isn’t even about Alabama anymore.
It’s Burrow vs Ohio State.
Alabama was just another rung in that ladder.

Now there’s an interesting thought. Will that be the game where mentally we have to calm him down?

The big thing now is we need to embrace the possibility of playing
Bama again instead of fearing it like we did in 2011.
Bama could get in again, but will be very difficult especially if Auburn
loses to Georgia, since their best victory, if they can beat them, would
be to a 4 loss team

It’s clear as day that Burrow has swagger and confidence that has spread to the whole team

Outsiders certainly helped refocus LSU, be it Burreaux or Brady, but a former head coach and stubbornness/capitulation in his offensive outlook certainly set the program back in this game.
O was willing not only to talk about the need for change, but he actually did something about it.

There's probably some truth to this. I think having an offense from this century has a lot to do with it though.
