Had a set of AP2's with Project X rifle 5.5 shafts in them. Just got a new set of AP2's and the guy I bought them from had put Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400's in them. The bit of reading/asking around that I did before I bought them led me to believe that the S400's would produce a lower ball flight. Having played with the new set for 2-3 months, I've found that the ball flight is pretty close to the same, but I've lost about 10yards per iron. Could this be related to the shafts or loft/lie? I'm getting the loft/lie checked on them today, but I don't know much about all the different shafts so figured I'd see if anyone on here could share some insight. TIA

Evil shafts. No idea what your swing speed is or your transition, but this is probably too much shaft for you. I've hit them before and lost lots of distance.

Could it be a heavier shaft causing slower swing speeds too?
Hard to know exactly what is going on without some launch numbers.

How long ago did you play the Project Xs?

I too lost 10 yds per iron, but it's 'cause I got old

3 things:

1.) Check loft first. Perhaps the lofts are different and that would be the most direct cause. Lie shouldn't matter all that much but has a small effect on dynamic loft.

2.) Flex isn't standard across manufacturers. What PX considers "Regular" flex isn't what DG considers regular flex.

3.) More importanlty, you went from a 115g shaft to a 132g shaft. The weight should've lowered the flight, but if you're still the same height but less distance then perhaps the shaft is too heavy and you've changed your swing slightly to compensate.

My advice is to play what feels comfortable if you still have both. If not, get with a local pro to look at your swing.

March. I actually said your exact quote to my brother in law, and his response was "not with how you hit your driver".

I'm going to get the lofts checked today to see what that looks like. If that doesn't appear to be the issue, I might just swap the shafts in the sets and see what happens.

I think this is essentially what I said.

So here's what I found out via the Edwin Watts lauch monitor...

First, the loft and lies on my set of 708 AP's and my 714 AP2's were the same. I knew the shaft in the 714's(DG S400) was heavier by 10-15g.

Got on the launch monitor with 7 irons from both sets, and a set of Mizuno JPX900(with S300 shaft). Club head speed was about 80mph across the board with all 3 clubs. The Mizuno and 708 AP2 went 168-172yds, and the 714 went 158-162. So something with that shaft clubhead combo on the 714's doesn't agree with my swing, b/c the clubhead speed was the same across the board. Probably spinning too much, was focused on head speed and didn't look at the spin . Either way I came away with a new set of Mizuno's, and light a set of AP2's...and have a set of 714's that are on the market if anyone is interested

5.5 is a firm flex and the S400 is going to be a heavy stiff on the cpm scale.

5.5 is also more of a boring flight so if you're hitting them about the same trajectory, then the S400's are actually flying lower than they should which would indicate a weight issue/ss issue.
