Route options from NELA to 30A

First trip to the beach in over 25 years for me. I hate the beach so wife and daughter usually go without me but I’m going to play golf all week.
I’ve heard the “war stories” about the traffic in Mobile, Pensacola and Destin so I was considering an alternate route but can’t get any feedback from friends with personal knowledge. The alternate route would be to cut over at Laura’s, MS and take Hwy 84 to Andalusia, AL and then hen south on Hwy 55 until I hit Hwy 331 and take it until it hits 30A.
Google Maps puts it about 30 minutes longer, but that does not tell the whole story about traffic and quality of roads. Can anyone advise whether the alternate route is worth trying? Any experience with those backroads?
Thanks

Make this trip once to twice a year and this is about your best bet. Waze is your friend. It will often route you just north of mobile and avoid the I-10 tunnel, but it just depends on traffic.

Then my route plus 331 should work.
There is a little construction S of Jackson on Hwy 49.

Thanks, I was just curious whether it was worth trying to avoid Mobile and the traffic, but it sounds like it’s not worth it.

You're welcome.
All you really have to avoid is the Tunnel in Mobile, if you arrive late.

Most importantly, which courses are you playing?

Windswept Dunes in Freeport
Camp Creek if I can pull some strings.
Then probably Burnt Pine and one or two more. Got one other friend and his wife going down at the same time so I’ve got to check with him.

The monkeytown bridge has always been the quickest way to get around Mobile. And l explain the historical significance to my kids, and they hate that shite, so I've got that going for me.
