Just did it as well so it's still working. Added a year and now it says next bill won't be until April 2021

I haven't done it yet, but it sounds like you need to prepay your gold first. Then upgrade for $1 and you get ultimate for the length of your gold up to 3 years worth.

What I did was buy a couple digital codes online, logged in to my microsoft account, went to subscriptions, entered the codes, then bought the $1 game pass.
The easiest place to get digital codes is some place like Amazon, but it's full price ($60/yr). There are some questionable sites out there where you can get it for $45ish a year.
