center on the 1984 team that played Nebraska in the Sugar Bowl. Had been sick for several months.

Was he first string or a backup? I don't recall the name.

Regardless, always a sad day when we lose a Tiger.

He started some of the time he was there. I couldn't tell you which years exactly.

What caused the liver disease? Sad to see that at such a young age! Prayers to the former tiger and his family!

I’m not sure what the “official” reason is but nevertheless he was a great person and would do anything for you if you needed him.

Tommy was one of four players from little ole' Winnfield High School that were ON SCHOLARSHIP at L.S.U. from 1979 to 1983 - Tommy Campbell, center; Kevin Poisso, defensive end; Rickie Chatman, linebacker; and Jeffery Dale, defensive back. Campbell, Chatman and Dale were all starters at some point in their time there. Poisso played some as a freshman defensive end and then left the program. Can you imagine 4 scholarship players at the same time at LSU from Winnfield?

He and a guy with a similar last name (Gambrel?) were 1a and 1b. Both were very solid centers. One of them opened the hole that should have beaten Nebraska. The fullback rumbled 10 yards to first and goal on the one. They called holding. We would have been up two scores in the fourth against a running team.
