What to do after initial phone interview?

About 2 months ago, I got a call out of the blue from a recruiter. He gave me his pitch for the job and it sounded good so I said I was interested. Sent the recruiter my resume and got set up with a phone interview with the CFO. Phone interview went great and the feedback I received from the recruiter was positive and that I would most likely be asked to come in for a face-to-face.
I've emailed the recruiter about once a week to stay in touch and see what the progress was. He said they were in a holding pattern due to the holidays and year-end and he would let me know something after the new year, which is totally reasonable.
Well the new year has come and gone and I've gotten no communication from the recruiter. I've called the recruiter a couple times and left a voicemail and I've gotten zero response.
How would you handle this?
I'm sure at this point, the position has been filled and that's 100% fine but I want to personally call the CFO and ask him what the status is and also tell him that I normally would go through the recruiter but he has been MIA. Someone convince me that this is a bad idea.

Unfortunately, this is all to common these days. I would just say frick it and move on.

I’m sure I’m dead in the water but I need to be flat out told no before I give up on something.
I guess the question is would it be considered poor form to contact a prospective employer directly if you’ve been working through a recruiter?

HR departments take forever and if you interviewed during the holidays it could be stuck on a step where people were out of town. Contact the guys you interviewed with as a follow up and thanks for the opportunity. I suck at calling people back to tell them they didn’t get it but if the position is still open and I received an email like that I’d offer some words of encouragement and let them know the process is still ongoing

And if you're "dead in the water" with the company as you suspect then you can't hurt yourself by calling the company.
Don't be surprised if they won't take or return you calls either.

Fair enough but does that excuse the recruiter not responding to calls?

There are a number of things likely happening right now --
1). Just because it's past January 1st doesn't mean "the new year has come and gone". Never underestimate how long the HR process takes.
2). The agency/company found another candidate that they like and are still interviewing them. That candidate probably was on vacation so the agency/company had/has to wait on the candidate's availability.
3). The company and agency are negotiating fees related your recruitment. Often times the fee is negotiated up front, but when the agency goes to close and presents them with a $20,000* PO, companies start to re-evaluate and exhaust all options.
*That's a random number. The industry standard is 20% of your first year salary.
I was in recruitment for a long time and that's the list of things that came to mind when you mentioned your situation, in order of what I believe is happening.
