Here is my mini review of the trip with significant other to Austria for the Hahnenkamm ski race. We decided before the three days there, we would ski in Austria, and we selected Ischgl.

We flew out on Thursday night, and arrived on Friday morning and immediately drove to Neuschwanstein Castle (ie, what Disney modeled his logo).

It was very beautiful, but more impressive from the outside than the inside.

We then did a quick drive to spend the night in Garmisch.

We stayed at the Gasthof Schatten and very reasonable at around 130 for the night and that included breakfast. Very walkable to downtown Garmisch.

Next day went over to the 1936 Olympic Stadium, which was worth the stop. Still has a ski jump. But then took a 25 minute walk to the Partnachklamm (Parnach Gorge)

It was so beautiful. Not sure how it is in the summer, but the ice, waterfalls, etc was worth the hike through the gorge.

To finish off the sightseeing, we went to Zugspitze which is the tallest point in Germany. What is nice about it is that when on top on a clear day you can see 4 countries. The cable car is new and longest unsupported span.

We then drove to Ischgl for our ski piece to begin

Ischgl is reknowned for its Apres Ski, so I said, no matter what, I could drink and why I chose it :)

We stayed from Saturday night until Friday morning at the Hotel Sonne. Now mind you, this is something we did for our 15th anniversary that is coming up later in the year. The total for the 6 nights was around 4k with us staying in a big suite. But it included breakfast, dinner, and afternoon snack. It also included our ski passes for the week, ski storage, etc..

We got plowed with snow every day minus that Sunday. It averaged 16-24 inches snow a day. But you would never know as the Austrians cleared it like no business.

One of the funnest things we did was an 8 kilometer tobaggan ride from the top to the bottom. Every corner on the way down was people stopped, taking shots and what not. Oh to be so young again.

[/img]

And this is a pic outside of the Trofana Alm which is great for Apres. Every bar/pub in Ischgl was great with there same terrible 30 German schlager songs that you hate at first, but love after a day. It is a real shared culture, and fun to watch

Then Friday morning we got to Kitzbuhel for the Hahnenkamm. It has always been an event I wanted to attend and it is up there with many other events I have been fortunate to attend.

We attended all three races from the Super G to the superbowl for them the Downhill and lastly the Slalom to witness Hirscher and Kristoffersen battle it out.

The post race downtown was packed but the partying was great with the Austrians, Norwegians (who were by far and away the craziest), Germans, etc.

You could get General Admission tickets for each race for around 25-30 USD. Or you could splurge for a VIP like we did for the one day to guarantee great views and get free beer and food.

The last pic was what we took outside our hotel just to show the amount of snow.

If you have specific questions about food, beer, etc, let me know and I will answer

Some tips:

Garmisch Restaurant - we ate dinner at the Gasthof Fraundorfer that had traditional german food, plus german dancers with music

Partnachklamm - entry fee was 5 euros per person. Worth every penny

Zugspitze - 85 euro for two people to get to the top. Expensive but if clear I would do it again. Up top they have a restaurant and pub, so I am nerd who likes to say I drank a beer at the highest pub in Germany

Kitzbuhel - we partied a lot at the Londoner. It is where the winner of the downhill actually bartends the night after his win. The place was packed but cool. They would play the national anthem of each country and then a popular song. They played Born in the USA but all others seemed to like it. But lots of Olympians in there also. They would stop every 15-20 minutes and say lets have a warm welcome for X who was a Y medalist at Z games.

Also, if you are renting a car that uses the Austrian highway make sure to get your pass at a gas station so you do not get ticketed. They are strict about it. My friend got a ticket that he had to pay the fine on the spot and it was close to 200 dollars.

Did you also go to Linderhoff? I think it's just as impressive as Neuschwanstein. If you go to the olympic sit in Innsbruck and go up to the ski jump, the landing site is in front of a a graveyard.

Such an amazing area so many things to do and see in less than a days drive, I need to go back someday.

Inches...this is a pic of my car that I dropped off around 9am and come out to clean at 5pm...

They were closing a lot of the slopes. The Austrians themselves were saying how they usually do not get that much snow. I missed out on some skiing, but I was just marveling at it all.

I am sure I am exaggerating some, but not by much. It was crazy. I wish I had my wifes phone as she has all kinds of pics of people shoveling roofs constantly.

Linderhoff was closed when I was there...so I did not make it.

I did get to Innsbruck, but thought it was ok...really liked the smaller towns in Austria more. But love the pic
