Is there any link at all to the outsized "outrage" we see to any "offense"?

Just a few decades ago, if someone were to say "neeger" or "f_a_g_"....the reaction would be:
That dude is an a-hole.
My dad said the old "sticks and stones..." stuff and told me to get over it.
Now, a huge uproar is created. We are told that to be "offended" is the worst thing one can endure. We have exaggerated how "injured" we should feel.We ban people from COLLEGE CAMPUSES for saying things that 'hurt feelings'. We had people 'scared for their lives' because of chalk sidewalk writing.
Were I to go to a foreign country and someone called me some derogatory name in their language (assume I don't speak it)...I'd have ZERO upset. Then, someone would have to translate it and I MIGHT feel some insult. The degree to which the translator emphasizes the import of the term MIGHT affect just how upset I get.
I've often wondered if we aren't 'weaponizing' (current commentary) the act of being insulted. It is much more horrific today to be "offended" than in the past. I just wonder if the way we have translated or explained the 'terrible way you were offended' has tended to exaggerate the reactions from the 'offended outlier'.

It is a problem with semantics.
It is not racist to call someone a nig. It is an a-hole thing to do. Not racist.

I think the OP is on to something here. The "sticks and stones" point of view is one you scarcely hear now. It seems that once prevalent view has been rejected in favor of a culture of grievance. I don't know that this is all bad, but I do fear that we have a population less equipped to deal with offense when they encounter it. Thanks for the thoughtful post.

How can the millenials "have a cause" if they don't "get offended" at every imagined "attack on their feelings".

At this point in time, words apparently mean more than actions. certain words cannot even be written on this board. Words that are only allowed to be said by select individuals.
While at the same time a person posted on a YouTube page that he was going to be “a professional school shooter”.
There is a huge difference in calling someone a name that may or may not offend them, as opposed to actually saying you plan to inflict bodily damage on a person or group of people.
Not all racists and bigots are murderers or even wish bodily harm to individuals. This Antifa movement is an absolute joke. They preach violence against speech which with they do not agree.
If you just step back and truly watch and see what is going in this world today it is easy to come to the conclusion that half the world is absolutely crazy. Nothing makes sense anymore.

Being offended is the currency of the victim classes. Without grievance, they lose power. That is the only explanation for the large number of hoax cases of racism/anti-gayism, etc.
This is a conscious effort by some, but mostly a subconscious phenomenon.
When I was young, there were usually one or two “tattle-tale” kids in the class. Most kids handled the back and forth of insults and jockeying for social status, a quick laugh, a bit of power. But the tattle-tale kids got power from acting offended and running to the teacher.
I truly believe it’s the same instinct that has taken over the aggrieved victim classes of today. They don’t really possess the desire for improved conditions (equality). They’d hardly notice or recognize equality. They want and need the grievance, and will lie and exaggerate as needed to maintain it.
