Thinking of planting these as a privacy screen. I keep going back and forth between the two. It seems Leyland Cypress is quite hardy to our area's summer heat but doesn't grow as fast nor as thick as the Green Giant does. Green Giant grows thicker and faster, but a little more susceptible to disease.

Anyone have experience with these two and can give their personal opinions?

If you don’t care about aesthetics , Just go with Bamboo. Extremely cheap. Grows roughly six foot a year up to 35’ tall. Plant roughly 5’ apart.

Bambusa Silverstripe is excellent for privacy fence.

Never ever plant that shite around your yard. That crap will run wild and almost impossible to get rid of it.

Leyland grows about 1 1/2' a year. A small one about 3' will take about 4 years to get 6'-7' tall. At that time, one can top the tree and the bottom will fill out more.

Don't know about the other.

I've always heard this too but had a landscaper recently tell me they have varieties that don't spread like that. You just have to be sure you get the right kind. Based on how I've seen it grow and spread before, I'd personally probably still be too trigger shy to go with it, but it's worth looking into now I think.

I'm going to plant a clumping variety of bamboo. They don't run and spread, grow fast and are good screen for privacy. Just don't get the wrong kind.

I've been thinking of bamboo as well. I'm looking at the Bamboo Alphonse Karr variety. It's a clumping variety that won't spread, rather it just grows in a circle shape to about 10' in diameter and stops there.

I planted a bunch of Leyland and they just didn’t grow. They didn’t die just never grew at the rate they said they would. Could be a lot of factors but maybe south of i10 is not an ideal zone.

Wrong,
There are two types: Clumping, and Running(the variety that’s spreads all over)

Just have to know what you are getting

I plan on planting around 150 3 gallon pots 5’ apart of Bambusa silverstripe in March.

Not if you get a "clumping" variety.

I didn't have any luck with Leyland.

How about hollies?

I'd love to line my property with a huge hedge of Nellie Stevens Holly but my wife won't let me. She's afraid of the spiky leaves injuring our children.

Cypresses dont make a great privacy screen. They are slow to grow, dont fill in at the top for years. Not to mention you got a row full of knees to navigate.

I would look at some kind of evergreen.
