So much to our annoyance, when we built our house I overlooked the contractor putting the upstairs compressor next to our bedroom window. It is equipped with a heat pump unit. Anyone with heat pump experience is probably aware of that terrible defrost/valve reverse or whatever the hell it is, extremely loud noise when it kicks in and off. I made the comment to my wife the other day that this winter we weren't hearing that noise. It came on and off quietly like the downstairs unit. Last night however it started with the loud noise again. The only thing I think I did differently was switch our nest thermostat from heat/cool mode to heat only. I'm going to try switching back but haven't yet. Not sure if it would even make a difference. My question is, is there some kind of mode I can put the unit in, like it was earlier this season to where that noise doesn't come on. I'm going to have to build a soundproofing wall eventually, but for now I need this damn noise to stop. TIA

I can hear mine, but have gotten use to it. Maybe with time you will too.

Same here. I have an older home. It was originally set up with one unit for upstairs and down. A 4-5 ton unit. Some previous owner replaced that with a 3.5 ton for downstairs, and added a small heat pump for the upstairs. I never noticed it too much since we slept in an upstairs bedroom on the other end of the house, or in the one downstairs we're in now at the other end of the house. But watching TV in the living room, it sounds pretty loud when it kicks on. But I'm right under it.

Your best bet is to add some sound proofing or insulation. Machines make noise. I remember how quiet my house was back in May when I had an issue with the HVAC. I would gladly trade a little fan and compressor noise for cool or warm air.

if you put the thermostat on emergency heat it should activate the electric heat strips which would provide heat without going through the compressor, just not sure if the "heat pump" would be trying to heat as well

I appreciate it but it's far from "a little fan and compressor noise" and my main question was does anyone know if there is a mode to switch to? I'm not sure why it just last night started making that noise again when we've been using it for a few weeks now.
