I use Paychex. They have great customer service. Used Aps before no complaints either.

Never used APS.

You basically have three classes of payroll companies.

Paychex and ADP are the old line programs, high touch service, attractive salespeople, and you pay the most.

The second tier is companies like APS and Netchex. More online-based, not as much handholding, not as expensive.

Then you have the do it yourself services such as QuickBooks payroll. It is the cheapest, but you have to do more work yourself.

I generally reccommend Paychex, because payroll is something you don't want to screw up.

We use Alliance out of The Woodlands. They are pretty good.

APS is a very good company. Local Louisiana company. They provide one on one customer service, unlike ADP or Paychex at a price point that is lesser than the big two.

We use ADP.

But we're fortune 100.
Service is fine.

Some companies tout guaranties regarding payroll tax liabilities (I know Paychex and ADP do this). There's value in that.
Some companies give discounts on health and other employer services but charge it back through expensive payroll (Insperity). There's value in that also.

Not everything "cheaper" has value.
Be aware of why some things are cheaper.

That said, one on one relationships with processing are valuable also. Some companies woo you into the contract and then disappear on the service (I have heard complaints about almost every company including Paychex with this).
You would think that the cost of originating business would entice a company to work harder to retain it. But sales/origination strategies often falter with many companies in the payroll services. Turnover is a big challenge that they also face.

I would recommend Paychex since their support is great. Their Preview program isn't super user friendly but you will get the hang of it. I met with APS once just because the girl was hot.

Unless times have changed, and they may have, if you're a small business and use ADP or Paychex's payroll platform what you key in may not be exactly what you get out.

Prime example, often payroll clients had to wait to preview their payroll. Why? Because an ADP or Paychex representative had to rekey in the information. Left plenty room for error.

The smaller companies, Pinnacle, APS, Advantage and Netchex have platforms that were built for today. The ADP and Paychex's of the world can't change course as quickly and must build bridges that don't always interface correctly.
