I started playing 4 years ago. Been retired for 3 years. It's the most rewarding thing I've ever done. Just curious if anyone else enjoys my passion. I have more info about the subject if anyone is interested.

Is that the thing always played during Sunday morning outdoors shows?

What is the difference between a hammer dulcimer and a mountain dulcimer?

My uncle used to make them.

Hammered dulcimers stand upright and notes are played by striking the strings with a mallet. Mountain dulcimer are played on your lap by picking and strumming. Mountain dulcimers are the only stringed instrument ever invented in America. Invented about 1800 by the Scots and Irish. I play a Mcspadden dulcimer. I recommend this brand.
Dulcimer playing is more common than you think. For song samples go to mountaindulcimer.ning.com. Go to friends of mountain dulcimer, click videos, go to page 5, The Rights of Man by Jessica is my favorite. I don't read music but you can play by following a tab that shows you where to fret your finger. Example; [ everythingdulcimer.com]. It's a great hobby for anyone and especially after you retire. Don't wait till your 61 before you start playing like I did.

My dad has a mountain dulcimer that I have messed around with. Neither of us can really play it though.

So you played for a year?
I don't play but I've done a little work promoting the dulcimer shops in Mountain View, AR. They have a nice rustic sound, it's real roots and bluegrass stuff. Always a good time.
One day I'll get up to Winnfield, KS for the world championship competitions.

There is a dulcimer gathering every year at Mountain View Ark the last week of September. I've gone the last 2 years and plan on going every year. There is a week of free dulcimer classes at this time. Classes are hard to find in La and I really have a great time.

Check these guys out. They are one of the few bands that feature a dulcimer. I really like their sound.

Go to Friends of Mountain Dulcimer for more videos. You might get the dulcimer bug like I did.
