In conjunction with the historic decision to return to its popular local nickname, the Charlotte franchise is making a donation to the Pelicans Gulf Coast Preservation Fund.
“We are very pleased to transition the Hornets name to Charlotte, where the name has a unique fit and meaning to their fans, much like Pelicans has to our fans and our region,” Benson said. “Working together with the Charlotte organization we were able to make this happen with the fans of both communities benefiting and we look forward to working with them on finalizing the specifics of the transition. We are also very thankful to the Charlotte organization for their contribution to the Pelicans Gulf Coast Preservation Fund. It speaks to the positive nature when two teams work together for the better good of our game, our league and our communities.”

The Pelicans have been pimping the gulf coast charity angle since the rebrand started. Anyone know if it's legit? I just googled Gulf Coast Preservation Fund and didn't find much. The few charities I did find don't mention the Pelicans. I'm not trying to suggest that anything shady is going on, I'm just looking for information on it.

I remember the season opener vs. the Bucks CP's last year they were giving out the "Believe in Blue" shirts, and selling those wristbands, but I think that was mostly for the oil spill recovery. That's pretty cool of them to do that, though.

Gulf Coast Preservation Fund
"Money for Pelicans"
Seriously though, pro sports teams always give lots of money to charity for good will, so I'm sure it's on the up and up, I just wonder if it's off the ground yet since I can't find any info on it.

Yeah, the Bensons aren't running a charity scam. Just weird that all the hits on a google search are AP links to the name change story or your PT thread.

They are both based out of Florida and the second one has a list of corporate partners and the Pelicans aren't among them. I'm not saying Floridians don't care about the Gulf too, I just was expecting this to be an LA or MS based organization.

I knew it! Benson bought the team just to turn around and sell it to Tampa Bay or some other Florida city. Flip this Franchise type shite.
