I basically thought that Manny and Haydel's were the same king cake/same frosting concept.

Now if y'all want a really good king cake, go to Tastee's Donuts. They sell a kingcake that is a donut that has sugar and icing on top. It's so good. And yes, this is different than the crap McKenzie kingcake recipe that they also sell in stores.

I'm not a big icing fan. To me a good king cake has great bread / cake that is chewy on the outside and soft in the middle.

I just bought one from Calandros and the bread was good but way to much icing.

In BR, I go to Gambinos and get the cream cheese and pralines king cake. It was really good.

If you aren't a huge icing fan, which I am not, Haydel's makes one old school style with just the colored sugars baked on top.

BR king cakes aren't that good compared to Nola.

I like Calandros (esp. the Italian king cake) for Baton Rouge, but you can buy Nonna Randazzo's king cakes from Carnival Mart by Cortana Mall.
