Just to be the Colt stickler on this board, I have to point out that Commanders are only made in West Hartford, CT. Ruger will have to call its gun something else...
They refer to it on their website as "commander-style" or SR1911CMD.
Most other 1911 manufacturers follow the same name designations as Colt did originally. For example...
Government (full size) = 5"
Commander = 4"-4.25"
Officer = 3"-3.5"
Kimber uses "Pro" and "Ultra" to designate their commander and officer ones to differentiate from other manufacturers.

I was coming to post that exact thing. We must be related. We think similarly.

I refer to my 4 1/4" American Classic as the "Commander" model because that's the name on the slide of the frame. I guess MetroArms better get ready for the lawsuit.

When 1911 is in your blood, there's no going back.

Congrats and welcome to the family. Bought my first one about a year ago and haven't looked back.

Maybe? AFAIK Colt still holds the rights to the term 'Commander' until at least 2015.

KR,
I really like my American Classic Commander. Metro Arms and American Classic are both made by the same company in The Philippians. They're imported by Legacy Firearms, the same company that imports Bersa. The Commander was my first 1911. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, not knowing whether I'd like the 1911 or not. The finish is a nice dark blue. The trigger breaks clean at about 4-5#. The action is tight. The only minor thing is that the grip safety is a little loose on one side, allowing the safety to rattle some. The safety functions fine. Should be an easy fix, but I've not yet taken the time to work on it.
