Anyone ever seen a Fata Morgana?

Also a type of superior mirage. People on the arctic coast have told stories about seeing cities in the sky before, probably attributed to this phenomena. Also may be responsible for the "flying dutchman"

This one is in Anchorage. The mirage is a distorted view of the Alaska Range a couple hundred miles away.
Images on the horizon are extreme distortions

quote:
A Fata Morgana is an unusual and complex form of superior mirage that is seen in a narrow band right above the horizon. It is an Italian phrase derived from the vulgar Latin for "fairy" and the Arthurian sorceress Morgan le Fay, from a belief that these mirages, often seen in the Strait of Messina, were fairy castles in the air or false land created by her witchcraft to lure sailors to their death. Although the term Fata Morgana is sometimes incorrectly applied to other, more common kinds of mirages, the true Fata Morgana is not the same as an ordinary superior mirage, nor is it the same as an inferior mirage.

Pretty cool how sights and sounds can get distorted in certain weather conditions.
Early explorers to the Canadian and Alaskan coasts told stories of seeing European cities on the horizon which was most likely this phenomenon.
It's been documented at mid latitudes as well
Can hide things too. Titanic theory..
Fata Morgana may have hidden Titanic iceberg.

True..I can identify with that..
Bet it also helps explains a lot of early nautical myths though.

that is exactly what I thought, too...can you imagine a ship full of sailors in the middle ages seeing that mirage that looks like a boat in the air?...they would have literally lost their minds...

Pretty wild. I have seen it before in the interior of AK across the tundra. Really can freak you out and I didn't have a clue what I was looking at.
