I am having a hard time understanding why in recent times concussion and head injuries have become such a big problem in football, where as in a sport like boxing, it seems like the very objective is to pummell your opponent in the head till he gets knocked out.

I have read that if you get a second concussion when playing football when you are still recovering from the first one, it can have devastating consequences (I think a high school kid died recently because of this). But in a boxing match, isn't there a chance that the guys get multiple concussion during a single fight, but still come back to fight the next time? Why is it so much more dangerous in football?

Also, many older football players apparently suffer from long term effects of multiple head injuries over the course of their careers to the point where they are unable to function independently and need help even doing basic chores. On the same lines, shouldn't all ex-boxing players be vegetables in their laters years? But we still see somebody like Mike Tyson acting in movies and taking part in Charlie Sheen roasts on Comedy Central? What gives?

Why is there such an apparent disconnect between the two sports when it comes to head injuries? Can the football world learning something from the boxing world in terms of how they treat brain injuries?

The concussion stuff is mostly bullshite, because Goodell is a control freak and feels the needs to leave his mark on every aspect of football and the NFL

Since the NFL is cracking down on big hits, boxing should ban fighters from punching to the head. Body shots only, and two hand touch.....problem solved.

Uh there are plenty of boxers who are suffering from brain damage. A lot more than football players in fact. However more football players suffer from debilitating injuries and chronic pain. That's because they take physical punishment all over their body instead of taking blows to the face and upper body.

There aren't many football players in as sad of shape as Ali. Have you ever listened to the older boxers? They sound like they've been hit too many times in the head.

I guess when you don't know anything on the topic the best move is to pull something out of your arse.

A single concussion does not present much threat to your brain and given adequate time to recover (i.e., return to baseline level of functioning) any long term impact is unusual. The risk comes with sustaining a second concussion within the recovery window, which is why players are often held out. This would apply to all sports, not just football. In fact, the rate of concussions is higher in women's soccer than in football when you look at collegiate samples.

Watched the cnn special on high school players concussions last night. It was some scary stuff. I would really be concerned if my kid was playing ball and there was not a medical specialist on the sidelines to check out the kids for head injuries. There was a doc on there that had 90 brains from former nfl players all the way down to high school players and the damage was significant in many of the brains. Eventually football will have to change.

I caught bits and pieces of it last night, but wasn't able to watch the whole thing. That show is what led me to think about make this thread.

Isn't there a chance that boxers get multiple concussions during a single fight? There is no recovery window there. What about them? How come more boxers don't die in the ring during fights? I am not saying you are wrong, in fact medical science has proved you right, but how does the boxing world deal with this? I am curious to know.

My guess? Because the guise of pads and helmets give football players enough of a sense of security that they think they're safe enough to avoid brain damage (until recent publicly presented studies saying otherwise).

Boxing is pretty much naked, open aggression with the absolute minimal padding with the sole goal of beating the shite out of your opponent. The risk is all up front. Until recently there's been that veil of what really happens to a football player's brains during that window. Boxing never his the fact that you'll be a vegetable by 50.

That's because Tyson didn't take that many hits to the brain. Most of his fights were over in minutes. Although I still wouldn't consider Tyson's brain a highly functioning one.

Estimated premorbid level of functioning is always an important consideration.
