This is a thread addressing the fact that people like me bitch and moan about the transfer portal. It has decimated this team to the point that we cannot even add the 25+7 to get to the 85(well…81).

Adapt or die. That’s it. That’s all there is. It looks to me like the new staff is doing it, just not at the pace some of you want. But what we as fans want doesn’t mean shite. If the roster is in as good a shape as it can be on 5/1, that’s all that matters.

I agree with all that.

But the ncaa makes it hard if you can only get 32 but allow as many out as possible.

That’s why building a better program culture here, as well as making sure NIL is handled properly, should make a huge difference. Players have to have a reason to stay when they don’t see the field immediately. If they are being developed and they are getting some money, they are less likely to jump ship at the earliest opportunity.

Even Bama and UGA are losing some guys to the portal, but they aren’t going to have mass defections because of the way they are built and are run. They have been able to get guys to be patient for their chances to play because they know they are being developed and they will have the opportunity to play for and win titles.

I will say this- it’s not easy to build a culture that stands up to where college football is today. Clemson has been pretty bulletproof, but even they have lost some to the portal and had recruits flip the last two years. Now they have longtime coaches moving on. We will see if Dabo can keep it going through all of this.

Arkansas is another example. Josh Pate of 247 has been banging the drum for now Pittman is building a tight culture that fits their program. It seems to be working for him, yet he just lost basically his entire secondary in one off-season.

So the hits keep coming too.

McGlothern and Adams out.

What would you do if your entire Defensive backfield transfers out except for maybe Cage and Davis?

You’d have to spend all seven portals-in toward db.
…..none left over for LB, RB, DL, OL.

Ncaa needs to make it to where you can replenish via transfer portal to at least 80.

Otherwise you will see extreme cases nationwide like you saw lsu in the Texas bowl.

Because we have proof that we got lucky that Mashburn sat way behind Five Star Gilbert on the depth chart.

it's not luck. Mashburn was a walk-on. walk-on's pick the schools they want to attend because they are paying their own way. Good for him sticking it out and earning playing time. i'm guessing Mashburn was one of the walk-on's who earned a scholarship when we were under the 81-cap.

There is no better definition of LUCK than having a serviceable walk-on when your other scholarship TEs cannot play.

It is luck.

There are way better definitions of luck than a walk-on, who sticks with their college while being buried on the depth chart. This happens all the time, and in fact, used to be the norm in college football. Unlike some scholarship players, walk-ons are at their school of choice to primarily earn a degree, and if they earn playing time or better yet, get awarded a scholarship that's just icing on the cake.

Oh jeez. Yes. Okay. Luck (now being labeled as ‘better definitions of luck’) has nothing to do with him being good enough to play on the field.

Gonna have to spend those on dbs now. That’s one of the last ones we have.
