Interesting satellite imagery of some gulf coast cities taken nearly 40 years apart. The older ones are from 1984, the newer ones are from 2021.
Baton Rouge:
Hammond:
Lafayette
Lake Charles
New Orleans
Northshore
Bonus - Houston, Texas comparison:

The wire going out into the gulf from NOLA, is that a zipline?

Look at the Northshore pic and the NOLA pic. The “wire” you see connects the two. The body of water is not the gulf but Lake Ponchartrain. The “wire” is the causeway- aka “the longest bridge in the world” (at one time).

It's a bridge going across Lake Pontchartrain to the north shore. Feels like you are driving in the middle of the ocean on it.
ETA - roughly 24 miles long

Ha! The Gulf? That’s actually Lake Michigan

Yes, it's a Zipline across the gulf of Mexico and connects it to Mandeville/Covington

Looks like it was mostly pastures 40 years ago.
Now just a disorganized collection of poorly thought out residential developments and giant industrial plants.

I did not know that was a bridge.
