I didn't follow this at all as it was pretty obvious they were guilty, so have a question; What was the reasoning behind the 4 felony murder charges?

I mean one guy was dead so 4 murder charges seems odd.

Each states laws being a bit different make it difficult to make sense of some things.

Each lesser felony (i.e. assault, false imprisonment) came with an associated charge of “felony murder” if Travis was found guilty of murder and the jury determined that the lesser felony was in furtherance (that is to say “aided”) the malice murder.

So each defendant was stuck with a group of 4 felony murders charges predicated upon the lesser charges to deal with if the killing itself was judged to be murder.
