Turns out Kirk Douglas in real real life seemed to have a lot in common with the character he portrayed in 'Harm's Way'.
I'd like to read it now to see if he even addressed any of the many rumors out there about him. I would be shocked if he did, though.

My impression as well.
Maybe that arrogance and "rumors" are reasons he and John Wayne didn't get along. (It was always said to be "political differences".)

So much to refute that the safe play was silence. Kirk was very likely the very bad man he was rumored to be. Most of the witnesses -- if not all - are probably gone too.
