The death penalty triggers an immediate appeal and they usually get dragged out in the court system, wasting millions in tax payer dollars.

Not to mention, it is far worse for the state to kill a wrongly convicted person which probably has happened more times than we think.

It's probably much cheaper to feed them 3 squares and put them in solitary.
