Most nationally recognized companies have good policies, but you also get what you pay for in coverage options. For homes, you want replacement cost settlement on contents and roof, but you’ll pay more because it’s above the standard coverage. Best thing you can do is shop around, get the agents to show you what is different about the quotes, and check out state resources about claims and complaints (like the TX Dept of Insurance or TX Office of Public Insurance Counsel, not sure about LA). You’re interviewing them as much as they’re selling to you.
Agents can help to figure out what you might want or need, but the price is set by the system. There are only so many ways they can tease out a lower price, so ask about discounts for jobs, education, associations, etc. Get an itemized quote and send them around. A good agent will cover the things you care about, take the time to help you understand, respond quickly when you call, help facilitate with underwriting, be honest about prices and increases, and advocate for you during claims.
I briefly owned an agency. Went back to O&G. You get what you pay for, for the most part.
