If by America you mean Louisiana, then the answer is Y-E-S.

When I have a Ole Piss fan tell me that he secretly roots for LSU cause "dat coach ya'll got sure do have a pair don't he" then I say peeps around the country are enjoying the way LSU plays ball

I don't think there is any such thing as a "most popular team".....
If you want to judge by population, it's hard to go against the big states in CA, FL, or TX........on a per capita basis, I would venture to say that there are a lot of fans in other parts of the country who've grown to favor LSU over the FLA's, USC's, & OSU's who've never touched ground in LA.......
it's that Cajun spice that they like......flavored with a little extra Lesticle "hot sauce"!!

LSU became everyone's surrogate team when they use to pack the stadium in Cholly Mac days with some very very tough but hard luck teams. The fans created a sort of cult following.
Then they began to win BIGTIME with Sabin and the bandwagoners came for awhile. The 2nd BCS title cooled that quickly.
Now I think we have a bullseye and we are no longer wearing the slipper and certainly not the favorite of the SEC, Big 12 of Pac 10 fans in general.

Americans love winners fellas. The die hard CFB fan has their fav team of course but I guarantee when a casual fan sees a LSU game on the TV, they wanna watch

Most people who aren't from Louisiana or LSU alums have an unfaborable view of LSU.
