Wave to the Wind might have the worst lyrics I’ve ever heard. That’s embarrassing. But I caught it live in Atlanta in ‘93 and the jam portion wasn’t all that bad. I like Victim a whole lot more than Jerry did. The “Patience runs out on the junkie” lyric hit a little too close to home for him. But that song jams. Not in a big way and it’s more discordant than a lot of their songs but I’ve always liked it. At least Bobby was writing interesting material while Jerry wrote Lazy River Road which just sounded like a retread of other Garcia/Hunter tunes and then he played it constantly. Sort of like I Fought the Law. Good lord that got tedious.
The funny thing about Days Between is I never really got it until I saw Bobby perform it at “Move Me Brightly,” a celebration of Jerry’s 70th birthday that he streamed live in HD for free from his TRI Studio. That was an amazing show that included a lot of artists. And it lasted for like five hours. And it turned out that I’d heard the song often enough for hat I was able to sing along. I wouldn’t have even expected that I could do that.
Man, that was an incredible show. I know they put out a DVD that includes the highlights and I’m sure it includes Eyes which was dazzling. They get into that Grateful Dead place where the music is playing the band and the young guest musicians are just grinning from ear to ear. Check it out if you can.
That Days Between still brings tears to my eyes.
