I don’t use social media for news, but how do you get your news?
Im not asking to be a smartass or anything, I am seriously interest. Where do you get your news from?
The only social media I use is Twitter & instagram (On twitter 90% of it is sports related, but I also use it to keep up with current events. Instagram isn't used to get news).
If I am following a news story, I do so through the WSJ or the AP.
Also, I have the apple news set up that I pretty use to get notifications. Most of them I have no interest to read about beyond the notification. But when there are current events I really have an interest in, I will look to see what is being said about it on both sides of the argument.
I consider myself a "responsible social media user" as well as anyone who uses it to follow family & friends in order to share pictures & to stay in contact. In fact, that seemed to be the initial purpose of social media. Key word being 'social'.
Also it started out as a good way to share information as well, but it slowly became weaponized.
When it comes to social media, I don't think freedom of speech applies because I see it as a tool. Sort of like a bull horn. If there is a huge crowd of people, you can use a bull horn so that more people in that crowd can hear what you are saying. That's what social media does, allows people to reach a bigger crowd to share their views.
Then there is the business side of it. I am all for companies making as much money as possible, but not at all cost. Industrial companies can't dump toxic waste into a community's drinking water and if they do and it starts to have a negative impact on the community they can be sued.
FB maximizes its profits by the amount of users and the amount if time those users spend on the app/site. Their algorithm is used to feed each user specific information that keeps them on longer and I think that is toxic.
