Obviously, this is very personalized and not a one size fits all situation. We have the most recent Purple mattress (don’t ask me which one, the wife swore by it before we got it). It’s been the best mattress I have ever had.
I’m a Marine veteran who has dealt with different joint pains (particularly my back) for a long time and no amount of physical therapy, easy exercise, etc could actually relieve the pain. My wife wanted to try this for me given it was a different design that had some reviews similar to my situation that the owners had pain resolved. Anyways, I’m always a skeptic and my wife believed in their return policy, so I said whatever.
The first morning after the first night, I was SORE. Veterans know that feeling though, as the first night or so of sleeping on a new thing is usually not the greatest feeling the next morning.
Anyways, a year into owning it, after that first night? I have had minimal back pain, feel refreshed in the AM. The mattress sleeps super cool if you like that, and I don’t think I can recommend it enough. It’s a “sleep on top of” mattress rather than “sink in,” but what it’s done for my QOL has been amazing.

Wow, so many brands and opinions, LOL. I've had a Sleep Number for 20 years now but have added a memory foam and mattress topper in the past couple of years.

It depends on your weight and body type. For me, I like firm mattresses. I have a Big Fig, and it's very firm. I also have a Saatva Latex Hybrid, and it feels just right for me.
I like memory foam, but I sleep too hot. I've laid on the Purple, Purple 2, 3 and 4. As someone basically said earlier, they're firm where you need it and soft where you need it. For me, the Purple 3 would be great.
If you're ever in Houston, there is a place where you can try a lot of the bed in a box mattresses. I'm not going to pay 4,000+ for memory foam. Latex holds up longer!
For lower back pain, I like a firm memory foam that allows me to sink in just a little bit for supportive body contouring. It's just hot to me though. Everyone is different.
Latex doesn't contour like memory foam, but I like it the most. It just works for me. My wife can sleep in concrete, so it's all good for her.
