Or you can actually do something serious... like mandatory E-Verify for every worker. Fines for individuals and businesses who employ illegal aliens. Trash the arcane H2B process and create a modern, easy to use system both for employers and foreign workers for jobs like seasonal farm work. Increase border security (not same as building a wall).

So put the responsibility of illegal immigration on employers? Add more paperwork on the employer, and fines? How about the Feds do their freaking job?

It seems like everyone always wants to pass the buck of responsibility to the private sector when it is the responsibility of the Federal government.

A huge percentage (in some years the majority) of the new illegal aliens in USA came in legally with a visa, and then simply overstayed their visa. If there is no way to stop them from working, there is no way to stop illegal immigration. What alternative do you suggest, have random check-posts all over the country that check for people's status? Economic reasons is one of the main reasons for people to illegally immigrate. If you can't put brakes on businesses hiring someone who is an illegal alien, you can never solve the problem.

Why not both?

One addresses why they come here and the other helps stop or return the ones that make it here.

Been doing the e-verify for years. I like it.

E-verify was designed not to work but to look like politicians were “doing something” to curb illegal immigration.

It verifies the paperwork, not the employee. A person can present borrowed, stolen or forged documents “proving” they are legal to work. The employer, if they actually care about hiring legit employees, has to be careful about questioning their documents or they face discrimination claims. If they don’t actually care about hiring legal workers, they accept false papers, check the box, ignore the ICE anklet and everyone laughs and moves on with business as usual.

A small business owner could care less about either of those issues, especially now with the shortage of workers. The government is paying people to not work, the business hires someone with a fake ID so they can keep their doors open, the Feds find out, fine the business. Yeah, sounds like another solid plan to redirect the responsibility of the government to someone else.

Why not build the wall, demand lawful immigration, and work in partnership with small businesses to sponsor workers working on their immigration status? It could be done through payroll tax incentives. The problem is the government doesn't want a solution for this issue or it would have been fixed decades ago. The solution is simple but I promise you it is not through some verification system that punishes and fines our business community. Let's stop demonizing the very people that provide jobs and make this economy turn.
