Is it just me or does that not make any sense...

Why would USC wait for the LSU job to open and allow their candidates to use the leverage?

Isn't the whole point of firing a coach this early to avoid a bidding war?

Or are they seriously waiting for O to be available?

I thought he was trying to say that the candidates will wait until the LSU comes open because it is a better job.

I think the implication is that candidates might wait for the LSU job to open, basically forcing USC to wait as well.

If USC is able to find the guy they want, and that guy is already available, I can’t imagine USC would intentionally wait… that would be counterproductive as you mentioned.

That said, USC may not have much choice but to wait regardless. Not because of LSU, but because it’s hard to make a coaching hire in the middle of the season unless you are targeting a guy that isn’t currently coaching. Most candidates aren’t going to leave their current team high and dry 3 games into the year.

Which is part of the reason I feel like cutting bait early is overrated. Unless you are certain that you can get the guy you want right now to try and salvage the recruiting class, you might as well wait until later in the season.

I believe he is saying agents will hold off until both jobs are open. That way they can have the two schools drive up the price for their client.

That wasn’t what Pate was saying. He was saying that coaches interviewed may want to wait on LSU to open, so they can either take LSU or use LSU for more leverage.
