We are actually building a house now and want to install a generator power inlet. Our generator has the standard 110 and 220 plugs.

Does anyone have a recommendation on a inlet?

The plug shown is rated for 30 amps, or 7200 Watts. As long as you use a generator rated for that power or lower you're good.

i would do a 50A generator inlet, it's the highest you can go from what i am aware of, if you did a 30A inlet and wanted more juice you'd have to change it out, might as well go with the 50A from the get go

after that you need to find a panel generator interlock kit to meet code

Do it right,, get a manual transfer switch, don’t go cheap and risk killing someone.

interlock kits are satisfactory in regards to safety as they block the main from being on while the generator is on and vice versa, and as i said, they meet code

This! Saw a story recently about a 19 and 20 year old getting killed because of this.

Like I said, no idea what to get as this isn’t my area of expertise. Can you show me what you are talking about?

You may want to look into a product called Generlink. If it meets code in your vicinity, it's my understanding that the power company will do the install. They aren't cheap but it's basically a cartridge or module that stabs onto your electric meter between the base and the glass readout section.

If you don’t really know what you’re doing ...

Find a decent electrician to help you. Tell them what you want to achieve with the generator and have them spec and install the appropriate connections. Have them show you what to do when the power is out and how to control the board.

I’d also suggest type out instructions on one page and laminate it. That way if you’re out of town or simply forget in the haze of bad weather and impatient family members, you know what to do even if you can’t remember two years later. Nothing worse than standing in the rain trying to troubleshoot with paper.
