I don't know that I've ever paid attention whether it was the total before or after taxes. I figure they can generally use it more than I can, so I'm not going to scrutinize much.

Tipping based on bill amount is ridiculous imo. Even at a nice dinner how much time does the waiter actually spend on your table? In many cases I would bet that they are making more per hour based in that tip than the person paying the bill. $100 tab did the waiter really do $15-20 of work? No imo
