This is the way.

Splitting costs with a neighbor can get dicey if that neighbor is a douche or moves out and the new neighbors are douchey.

If they want a fence, that's on them. If you want a fence, that's on you. Anything else is asking for eventual trouble.

We lost most of our fence due to Ida, asking neighbors to chip in on it has never even been a consideration.
