The only larger than life character that WWE has been able to rely on in the last 5-7 years is a guy that half the time seems to not want to be in WWE and wouldn’t be doing it at all If he wasn’t the highest paid wrestler in the world by far whether he deserves it or not.

On Gargano…..with the creative brilliance of WWE from 95-05 you could have turned him into a huge draw.

also... we're having his discussion and completely dismissing Rey Mysterio (who's still doing it to this day) and the late, GREAT Eddie Guerrero or even WCW/WWF Chris Jericho

neither fit that mold and yet did their thing to get over and forced their way to the top of the card

He wouldn’t have been the franchise back then, but could he have filled a niche? Absolutely. He can still fill a niche in the mid card. The problem with a lot of Indy darlings (and not putting this on Kyle) is that they think just because a few hundred guys in a high school gym go nuts for them means that can do the same night in and night out in 15k plus arenas and a handful of 50k + stadiums each year. It’s different being able to sell tees to a few hundred die hards and being able to have huge appeal where network executives are asking you to appear on other programming and studios want you to have a role in their movies.
