I think the crux of the current situation comes down to what is the real pull out date.
If it's 8/31 then the US has a huge task to get everyone out.
If it's 9/11 as the Taliban have said, it's still a huge fast job to get everyone out.
If we're going to stay until they are all out, it will work if the Taliban allow it to work. If they choose to, the Taliban can shut down that airport stranding our troops and people.
Everyone saying we should impose our will on the Taliban is failing to grasp the situation. If that runway is shut down, We're surrounded in enemy territory with no logistical support other than what we could airdrop in.
It would take a massive mobilization to put enough troops on the ground to take control of Kabul back from the Taliban. Would Biden be willing to commit to that size escalation? He has sure been adamant about the need to leave. Turning around and putting 30K plus troops and their support on the ground would be a massive reversal.

Agreed, but think 100-200k, and 6+ months to get there. Everyone is dead for sure as well.
