He got the colors all wrong; all the Spitfires I’ve seen in footage from the Battle of Britain were black, white, and shades of gray.

The model spitfire he made wasn’t in service during the Battle of Britain, according to the article. It didn’t see action until 1944. So the coloration wouldn’t be the same.
