Are names like Mike and Mary gone forever?
Michael was the 12th most popular boy's name in 2020 (still pretty popular). Statistics going back to 1900 show it had never been higher than 13th before 1943 when it was 10th. From 1943 through 2016 it remained in the top 10 and had a long streak at #1.
Mary has fallen off drastically in popularity. In 2020 it was the 124th most popular girls name. From 1900-1946 it was #1 every year and it remained top 10 until 1972 when it fell to 13th and it has been steadily falling since then.
The top 10 most popular boys names in 2020 are still fairly traditional, some obviously really old names actually:
1. Liam
2. Noah
3. Oliver
4. Elijah
5. William
6. James
7. Benjamin
8. Lucas
9. Henry
10. Alexander
Girls seem a little more modern but still mostly traditional:
1. Olivia
2. Emma
3. Ava
4. Charlotte
5. Sophia
6. Amelia
7. Isabella
8. Mia
9. Evelyn
10. Harper
