I would read up on the recent incident in TX where the energy company took control of people's wifi thermostats and raised the temps in their house during an energy shortage.
It seems the authorization to do that was buried deep down in the User Agreement.

Easy to override and you have to opt in on Ecobee. It tells you when it's doing it as well.
