Ok did some research. He pitched on Fridays for the first 2 or 3 games. Got shelled. Then the next few outings were 3 or 4 innings on Sat or Sun... Still got hit pretty well. Finally finished the second half of the season pitching 1 or 2 innings on weekdays. Quite the quick fall from grace. He was great in 2020 though. For the shortened season. But to call him their Friday guy is disingenuous.

He was projected to be conference pitcher of the year coming into the season. In other words, he was not only their Friday guy but he was projected to be the best Friday night guy in the league.

Yes, he struggled for most of the season. He also had an injury that limited him down the stretch, but he still finished fine in his capped outings. He's had a good summer.

He's a formidable lefty, whether he breaks the rotation, is used situationally, or eats innings out of the pen.

Shaffer was their Friday guy in 2020 and was off to a great start before the shutdown. This year he started the season in the rotation, struggled, was shut down for a month due to injury, struggled in the rotation after returning and then pitched really well out of the bullpen the rest of the season.

Just like about 10 other guys he’ll probably get a legitimate shot in the Fall to be in the rotation but at worst he should be a key bullpen arm on the weekend.
