Considering maybe the East Coast (anywhere along VA, NC, SC or GA)
There are a lot of options to get from DC to BR. Places to consider:
Pipestem State Park in southern WV. It's a 5 hour drive from DC and then 13 to BR so you probably would want to break that up.
Williamsburg, VA - lot of history there and nearby and Busch Gardens is there also.
Kill Devil Hills/Nags Head - there are not a lot of hotels here and most of the homes only will rent for a week in the summer. We usually stay at the Hilton Garden Inn.
Ocracoke Island, NC - drive down the outer banks to Hatteras and take the ferry. You should be able to take a boat to Portsmouth Island and may be able to rent ATV to ride around it. Portsmouth is a primitive island.
We haven't been to Ocracoke in several years. When you leave take the ferry to Cedar Island. We stayed in a B&B on Ocracoke a few years ago but there are some non-chain hotels.
Myrtle Beach - it's touristy but it has lot of things many teenagers like to do.
St. Simon/Jekyll Islands - these are laid back places near Brunswick, GA.
Cumberland Island - have to take a boat to get there out of St. Mary, GA. It's a day trip. We have not been here but it seems like a cool place to visit.
