I've never had anywhere near this sort of relationship with a landlord and quite frankly I find it strange.

I do understand being concerned about rent and asking about employment up front, but for me personally, what I'm doing for a job (or not doing) had zero bearing on my ability to pay rent and wasn't anyone's business.
