I’m in the process of trying to build my first PC so I can play the Diablo 2 remaster coming out in September or so. I’ve been checking slickdeals and Newegg has the intel i7 10700KF for $240. I figured I was going to buy an amd cpu because typically they are cheaper but it seems like intel has dropped their prices. So is this intel chip better for my needs or should I wait a few more months to see if amd prices start to come down?

Diablo 2 remaster won't require an insane PC or anything, but the question is more is that all you're going to play or will there be other games?

At this point in time, it's all about what video card you end up with since they are in short supply and overpriced. The prices are coming down, but you're still looking at paying anywhere from 50 to 100% over MSRP, with cards like the RTX 3080 being 120-130% over MSRP. Typically you pick a video card based on the resolution you'll be gaming at, and then pick a CPU so that your video card isn't bottlenecked.

It will be D2 until D4 comes out in a year or two. I don’t play any other games. I understand the gpu pricing is crazy and I’m just trying to wait it out until I can while also trying to find the best deals for my other components

The issue is that you don’t know what the wait will be. Cpu deals are basically a daily occurrence at this point. Focus on buying a gpu. Once you do, you’ll be able to find a solid deal on a cpu within a week.

Basically this, don’t buy anything until you get a GPU. If you’re not willing to pay these crazy prices, you could be waiting several months and then buy everything else. That same CPU could be under $200 by then, or get a 5600x or something on sale.
