Combine the Copa and Gold Cup?

There was talk a couple of years ago that discussions were happening to combine both the Copa America and Gold Cups, should the US be in favor of such a move?
Watching the Euros and Copa I am jealous of these teams being able to play real tournament soccer, outside of the World Cup. I do think that is something that impacts the US in the World Cup in that we just don't get enough high-intensity matches through the years.
Combining together you could easily fill-out a 24 team tournament, which I will admit it would probably be dominated by the CONMEBOL teams most years, but just think about how much better than the Gold Cup it would be.

I think you'd get significant opposition from the Mexicans. They at least can hang the occasional Gold Cup trophy. If you combined it with the Copa, they'd never come close to winning it.

I'd think the vast majority of CONCACAF would be against it.
I'm also not sure if CONCACAF would bring enough to the table to make it worthwhile for CONMEBOL to agree to it.

The majority of federation doesn't make the Gold Cup either.
My question is really should the US be for it? At the end of the day we need a solution to the CONCACAF problem.

But more of them will make the Gold Cup (at least if you are using the 16 team GC vs the 24 team combined) and will have a better chance of making the semis. Why would teams like Costa Rica, Panama, etc. vote to combine the two?

But they have a better chance of making it than no chance of making Copa America.
And considering the shitty CONCACAF nations threw their combined weight around a little bit to make the Nations League, I can see them doing the same thing to make sure that Copa America cannibalizing the Gold Cup doesn't happen.

In a 24 team tournament, 14 CONCACAF team would make the new format over the 16 presently. However, I think the over benefits of the more money the tournament would bring in would make up enough to persuade the island nations.
But again, my question is what should the US want?

Do we? I think playing in a terrible confederation may be a benefit.

I would argue it isn't when it come to the ultimate goal, winning the World Cup.
If your goal is to make most World Cups and flame out than sure.

Whatever they decide, they should never play in the same year as the Euros.
What a dumb decision by CONMEBOL.

They should want to be a part of the Copa America.
With that said, I wouldn't want them apart of CONMEBOL qualifying.

Agree. We really need a good tourney of the best 24-32 teams in the Western Hemisphere.
Can have enough guaranteed spots that I think both associations could agree to it.

The Euros got pushed a year because of Covid ... Unless Copa did also than yeah you're right.

But why is that? Is iron sharpening iron the idea?
I don’t really think players develop much in international camps, so I’m not sure I buy that. There just aren’t enough international games.

The experience gained in playing in high pressure games as a squad. Especially when talking about young teams.
You don't think a Euro experience will help teams next year in the desert.

It certainly could but at the end of the day, the quality of the players on team is what most important.
Development of talented players comes out of youth interest in the sport and financial investment at the youth level. I think both of those are more likely to be high with the team making the World Cup consistently.
Ideally we could qualify through CONCACAF, maybe easiest confederation to qualify from, and play in COPA America. I don’t know if that’s possible other than the one-off though.

The Copa decided to have their tournament in 2020 as well and then pushed it to 2021 due to Covid.
The next one is scheduled for 2024. I just don’t get why they wanted to shift from their 2015, 2019, 2023 schedule.

I just want CONMEBOL to invite the US and Mexico to Copa. It would bring in more money for them and would benefit US and Mexico to play against better competition.

More I think about this, the more I’m convinced it’s gonna happen. There is so much money to be made by having the USA and Mexico play Brazil and Argentina every 4 years that it’s too much to keep passing up. Can do a 16 24 or 32 tourney and it would come close to rivaling the Euros after the first few runs. Call it the battle for the Western Hemisphere or something related.
