I don't know about this. For one, I am absolutely sure the US security state would willingly lay waste to anyone it wants to, and it has done so across the world time and again. They certainly have shown no scruples about sending young Americans to die abroad, and I'm not sure the thought they would be killing Americans on home soil would prevent them from doing so, if the situation was so dire that it resulted in the US security apparatus losing power.

Secondly, while the US citizenry is heavily armed, it is also heavily atomized, and that doesn't bode well for the key feature of resistance movements, which is robust organization, something the VC and the Taliban definitely had. We are also far more likely to break into smaller groups fighting one another than we are to organize against the government. That makes the control aspect much easier.

Thirdly, the US population is relatively old and super fricking fat across all classes and demographics. That would be the most surprising part of any future resistance.
