Does anyone have any experience on these? I've always believed Cummingsa and Kohler were the best with the Kohler having the best service.

I am helping a friend near Houston and ran across a dealer who has a great reputation and maintains 5000 home standby generators annually, including the Border Patrol on the Rio Grande. He is a dealer for Cummings, Kohler and Briggs and Stratton.

He absolutely swears that Briggs and Stratton is a stronger more dependable machine.

So I am looking for any information on their quality and dependability with the commercial Vanguard engine.

TIA

I don’t know but my dad got a generic couple years ago and couldn’t be happier.

He said it was to cold outside when it snowed to be messing with his Hobart welder/generator

Had one since 09, works great. You need to keep up maintenance. That means foam seals on front of engine, seal on end of alternator, foam seal to air filter, and of course oil and filter change. Mine has outlasted most of the generacs in my area.

Thanks for the info. Generacs are inferior. I am down to Kohler and Brigss & Stratton. Cummings is good bud doesn't have the dedicated residential service networks.

I really do not want to be "that guy" but the word is Cummins, no g at all.
On topic:
I have a Generac 22,000 natural gas genny that was installed when I built my current house in 2010. I have used it through several hurricanes and tropical storms as well as just run-of-the-mill power outages. (common in my area) So far I have only had one problem with it but it came at a bad time. After Hurricane Issac hit we were without power for about 6 days. The second day after the storm, the generator would crank over but would not start when I started checking it out I found that the oil pressure switch was bad and that is what was not allowing the unit to start. Now try and get a service tech for generators out to your house two days after a hurricane. Anyhow, since I have a guy that services my genny once a year, I called him and he had a used switch so I ran down to his house and picked it up and that fixed the problem. I now have two spares, the used one he gave me and a new one that I ordered online when I ordered a new one for the unit.
I have no complaints with mine but I will warn you, they suck down a lot of fuel when running around the clock. Since my house is relatively new and since I have very good insulation, including spray foam under the floors, my house would stay fairly cool up until about 3:00 pm on any given day without electricity, I was able to run it for a couple of hours in the afternoon and then run it all night so my A/C would cool down the whole house in preparation for the next day when it was wash, rinse, repeat. LOL
All in all, I have no issues with my Generac but I believe that maintenance is the key to longevity for any piece of equipment.

Edit to add:
I bought mine online at the following link. They beat any local price that I could find at the time and they didn't charge state sales tax. So even with shipping charges, I still saved around $500. It was truck shipped so I had to have a place to unload it with a fork truck and I have a sawmill next to my property so they were glad to unload it and bring it to my house site.

Someone maybe on here was saying Briggs were good due to american parts and Generac being very Chinese. Not sure if any of this is true.

This is the key for any brand.

Lets be real, these things run for 1 hour or so a month, they may or may not run your home for a few days a year.

Other than that, they just sit there. If people arent willing to do the maintenance or pay someone reliable to do the maintenance then they are just pissing away the money.

An argument could be made the installer/maintainer is just as important as the genset itself.

My parents have a 12 or 13KW NG Briggs and Stratton standby generator. Got it in 2013. Only issue was a cheaper battery was used as a replacement when the original battery died. The cheaper battery ended up cracking/exploding and fried the mother board, out of warranty of course. They got on a service plan after that. Put a better back in it too.

My neighbor has a Briggs I think it's the 20Kw Fortress and he likes it and hasn't had any problems. It's about 3-4 years old.

I have a 30kw Briggs that’s almost 10 years old with no issues. I’ll buy another when the time comes.

The previous homeowners installed Briggs. I am not sure how old it is but it has over 550hrs on it. Our power goes out for a couple of hours at least every month. The only thing I have done over the past 3yrs is change the oil and replace the foam seals the previous poster mentioned.

I will need to replace the base in the near future because they used a cheap plastic base for the original install. I would pouring a real pad if you can.

Had one at my previous house 12 years...Zero Issues.

Did all maint as stated.

Installed another at new house 2 years ago.

Only difference is it doesnt come with a 10 year gel battery as it did before.

I recommend it.....Ordered from Norwall and had no issues. Freight delivery was great. They crate the generator very well for shipping.

Led Plate for Diag codes

Add this under the transfer switch...It helps if something happens...Doesn't start or something.
