Either (a) the percentage in past generations were similar but social stigma resulted in under reporting or the more likely (b) identifying as LGBTQ is social currency in today's world and everyone wants to feel celebrated and placed on a pedestal, especially for something that requires nothing more than simply labeling yourself.
