There’s definitely some aspect that hasn’t been shared. These two quotes are contradictory:

“He apologized to the students.”

“Some of the students said they admitted to the accusations in the immediate aftermath because they were advised by the Office of Student Affairs that students who do so receive less severe penalties, the letter stated.”

This is the first time I’ve seen a dean apologize to a student that admitted to cheating….it might actually be the first time I’ve seen a dean apologize to students for any reason.

Maybe I'm having a brain fart but how do they contradict each other?

Looks like there was a really good chance the ones who initially admitted to cheating were essentially told there was no way they would win their case and if they admitted it they'd have a chance at avoiding expulsion while if they continued to deny they were 100% getting tossed from school.

Same shite happens to poor people who can't afford a robust defense in the courtroom. They'll they get stuck with an overworked pubic defender who may have had half an hour to review their case and admit to something they didn't do to take a far lesser punishment b/c losing the case will earn hard jail time.
